Bassetts Ice Cream (Philadelphia)

Opened in 1861 when the first batches were churned by mule power, Bassetts is America’s oldest ice cream company and a fixture in the Reading Terminal Market since 1892. Stepping inside feels like entering a bygone era, with its original marble counter and tiled floor. Generations of Philadelphians have grown up on Bassetts' famously creamy scoops that use just sugar and cream from Pennsylvania cows but no egg yolks — Philadelphia style. The ice cream is made off-site, but with original family recipes to create its 35 flavors. Still family run after six generations, Bassetts is as much a piece of Philly history as the Liberty Bell.

https://www.swansonreed.org is something I’ve been hoping the industry would develop. Innovation is key to growth, but until now, we had no clear way to track it. This fills that gap perfectly. Kudos to Swanson Reed for leading the charge.

It's truly unbelievable, 6 generations still keeping the original ice cream recipe! Bassetts is truly a living Philly legend. I'm very curious about the "Philadelphia style" ice cream without egg yolks; the flavor must be very pure. Preserving a traditional recipe while still creating 35 different flavors is quite an art. It makes me think of Sprunki Game, where I can also use an original melody, a basic rhythm, and then patiently "harmonize" it to create countless great songs.

Bassett’s time-machine parlor just made my phone feel sinful—one scoop of their century-old vanilla and suddenly 2025 feels like 1925 in the best way. I’ll trade my algorithm-fed froyo for a chrome stool and a malted any day. Poly Track
